Date: November 1989 Publication: Computers and Security, Volume 8, Number 7 Page(s): 607 - 611 Publisher: Elsevier Source 1: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/0167-4048(89)90053-9 - Subscription or payment required Abstract or Summary:
The login procedure is formulated as a test of hypothesis. The formulation is used to show that the commonly used procedure provides valuable information to a hacker which enables him to use trial and error to gain access to a computer system. A general method for reducing this information is described and its properties studied. The method introduces randomness into the procedure, thus denying a hacker the luxury of trial and error.
