Andrew Miffleton sentenced to 21 months imprisonment for stealing and using Verio passwords
Incident Date: February 1999 Incident Location: Arlington TX USA Andrew Miffleton was sentenced in federal court on July 24, 2000 to 21 months imprisonment and a $3,000 fine for stealing Verio account passwords. Mr. Miffleton, of Arlington Texas, pled guilty on December 20, 1999 to a charge of possession of unauthorized access devices (Title 18, USC, Section 1029(a)(3)). Mr. Miffleton, known by the online alias "Daphtpunk", was associated with a group called the Darkside Hackers who involved themselves in various criminal enterprises, including the fraudulent use of cellular telephone and long distance services. In February of 1999 Mr. Miffleton obtained a list of approximately 40 user account passwords, some with administrator privileges, from the national Internet service provider Verio, Inc. Information was unavailable on how these passwords were obtained. Mr. Miffleton shared some of these passwords with other members of the Darkside Hackers. Use of these passwords resulted in a nearly $90,000 loss to Verio.
