Attacker stole and cracked password files to gain access to victims
Incident Date: 1996 Incident Location: New York City NY USA During a 1996 investigation in New York City, authorities found that a hacker named Wesley had collected password files from several universities and some local businesses. They determined he was cracking passwords and using them to gain access to these organizations. Wesley was charged with possession of more than 50 password and user ID combinations, which was a violation of 18 USC 1029. He pled guilty with a reduced sentence in July of 2001.
