Abstract or Summary:
This study focused on analyzing the passwords of 3,163 users of a corporate computer network. The passwords were available in plaintext, which allowed complete analysis of their composition and other characteristics. Passwords were placed into different categories based on their apparent method of creation, and their structure was analyzed for character placement patterns. For comparison purposes, these passwords were contrasted against data available from a Robert Morris Sr. and Ken Thompson password study from 1979.
